What are we learning? - Weekly Focus Religion: This week we will be reading from Revelation 21 - 22. The virtue that we are applying is justice. Our question we will be applying is: how can you help join Jesus to help put all things right? Math: Students will be finishing their unit on measurement. We will have an assessment on Thursday over metric and US customary measurements. Reading: Students will be continuing to read through their novels and complete them this week. Then they will begin a book report to share their novel with the class. Writing: Students will be working on their typed drafts this week. They will be then adding text features and creating presentations to share with the class. Science: We have worked on push pull forces but this week students will be exploring magnetic forces. Social Studies: Students will have their economy store this week! They will be selling their products to other classmates and trying to make a profit. Then they will have a final assessment on economy. Announcements *On May 14th, students will be having a class economy where they "sell" product to their classmates and track their profits. Students were given the option to bring these from home that should be communicated to you if needed. Plan on sending those in on the Tuesday, May 14th. * Tuesday May 21st we will be having a classroom party. Students are asked to bring in a snack to share with the class! We are looking at the letters that are written to the churches. Our virtue that we are applying is integrity. The question that we are answering is: What do you need to hear and respond to stay true to Jesus? Math: This week we are continuing to study measurement. We will be continuing the study of both the metric and US customary measurements. Reading: Students are each working through group novels. They have vocabulary and questions for each chapter. Then at the end of their novels will create book presentations to share. Writing: Students will have their paragraphs for their entire research project drafted by the end of this week. They will be working on editing and typing up a final draft by the end of this week so we can put it together next week. Science: We will be reading about what forces are at work when objects move. Students will work on modeling and showing in a diagram with labels. Then we will have a lab about balanced forces on Friday. Social Studies: We will be working on marketing for our classroom economy store! Students will spend the eLearning day making their products and market them to the class on Thursday before the economy "opens". We will be using the virtue of diligence and answering the question: how can you become an example of faith? Math: Students will be starting a new unit on measurement. We will be looking at finding the appropriate form of measurement based on what we are measuring. Reading: Students will be starting a new novel in groups. Students will be answering questions and using text for evidence to support answer. Writing: We have started working on research projects. Students have been researching a topic and finding three subtopics to write about. This week we are working on putting the information together in paragraphs. Science: Students will be participating in a STEM project that involves natural Indiana wildflowers. They will be discussing their needs and life cycles. Social Studies: This week we are continuing to study economy. Students will be planning their budget and buying materials for their classroom economy project. Announcements *We will begin this week. What are we learning? - Weekly Focus Religion: We will be reading from Act 11:19 - 26. This tell the story of how Barnabas encourages other Christians. Our virtue is responsibility and our essential question is: how can you take responsibility to encourage others? Math: We will be finishing our unit on geometry by looking at different quadrilaterals. Then we will have a review day before Friday's assessment. Reading: We are continuing to read our novel, "Sarah Plain and Tall". Students have been working on vocabulary strategies and applying comprehension strategies from throughout the year. Writing: Students will begin a research project this week. They will each pick a topic and then deep research each topic. They will write, edit, and type their research to share with the class. Science: We are starting a new unit on forces. Students will have exploratory labs and then begin exploring the types of forces. Social Studies: We will be reading through our novel "The Lemonade War". Students will also begin to plan their own stories! They will have budget of materials that will be provided line paper, etc. If students want to bring in a small object to "sell" to classmates they may. More details on our class economy to come! What are we learning? - Weekly Focus Religion: We are reading from Acts 28:11 - 31. This tells the story of Paul arriving in Rome. We are looking at the virtue of courage. The question that we will be answering is: how can you courageously follow Jesus where ever he takes you? Math: We will continue to study polygons. Students will be applying their knowledge of lines and angles to describe their attributes. They will also work to define the differences of quadrilaterals. Reading: Students will be reviewing their text comparison learning targets. They have stations to practice. Then having an assessment. Our next unit will be using student literacy groups for novel studies. Writing: This week we are reviewing our unit on iLearn writing prep unit. Students will be working on editing and revisiting the rubric they are given. Then we will get to spend a day sharing and publishing their final drafts. Science: Students will be looking at the skills that animals have for survival. We have learned about how each animal has traits that God has given specifically to help them survive. Then Friday students will have a final assessment. Social Studies: We are starting a book called "Lemonade Wars". This has two siblings that each start a lemonade stand while showing the elements of an economy in action! This tells the story of Paul and his jailers being shipwrecked. The virtue that we are discussing is courage. The application question is: how will you find courage when it feels as though you are losing the fight? Math: We will be starting a new unit on lines and angles. This will be the foundation for our unit as we look at attributes of 2-D shapes. Reading: This week we are finishing our unit on text comparisons. Students have done well working on the identifying the main idea and key details needed to compare the texts. This week we will continue to explain differences that include author perspectives. Writing: We are continuing to work on prepping for iLearn. We have been working on adding sources to our writing and using our computers for the entire process of writing - since students will be testing digitally. Science: After learning why animals have different traits, the week we are going to participating in labs that show examples. We will be doing a lab that shows different bird beaks and why God might have created them all differently. Social Studies: We are continuing to study economics. We worked to lay a foundation of vocabulary last week we will begin to read a book called "The Lemonade Wars". We will be reading and looking at the strategies that the siblings use to sell the most lemonade. Announcements *There are assignments that will be sent home Friday for Monday. We will be reading from Acts 25 - 26:32. The virtue that we are applying is respect. Our question is: how will you show respect to an authority who opposes you? Math: In math this week, we will be finishing our study on area and perimeter. Students will be reviewing their unit and testing this Friday. Reading: Students are studying text comparison this week. They will continue to read two different texts that share a common theme while comparing and contrasting the information presented on the topic. Writing: We are continuing to train for iLearn! We will be reading texts and using that information to write texts this week. This additional step will need additional practice. Science: Last week, students worked on what animal traits are and why God gave animals certain traits in order for survival. This week students will engage in an ecosystem lab and discuss animal functions. Social Studies: This week we will be starting a unit on economics. What are we learning? - Weekly Focus Religion: This week we will be reading from Acts 21: 1 - 20. This tells the story of Paul being arrested and speaks to the people and authority. The virtue that we are applying is responsibility. The question that we are answering is: how is Jesus encouraging you to be accountable to God and others? Math: We are continuing to learn about area this week. Students will be working on the factors of multiplication to help create rectangles with different perimeters but areas that are the same. Reading: Students will be finishing their author point of view stations and then finishing their author point of view assessment. Then we will begin starting a new unit on text comparison using key details. Writing: We will begin to practice review the three types of writing styles and looking at how we can be ready for iLearn. Students will practice how to plan and type their papers on their computers - which prepares them for the same style of testing with iLearn. Science: This week we will be reviewing animal traits. Students will be looking at what animal traits are and why certain traits fit in different ecosystems. Social Studies: Students will be finishing their timelines using important events of Indiana's history. Then they will take time sharing their timelines and discussing the impact that it has our current community. What are we learning? - Weekly Focus Religion: This week we will be having morning devotions as a whole school as a way to celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week! We will also be reading about Paul heading to Jerusalem. We will be reading from Acts 21:1 -20. The virtue that we are applying is responsibility and our question is: how will you face your journey with God even when you know that you will face danger? Math: We will be continuing to study perimeter this week. Students will be applying what they know to an unknown side with perimeter. Then we will begin to learn about area - giving us additional practice for multiplication. Reading: Students will be working with author perspective and providing evidence to support their claim. Then students will also start to find reasons that they agree or disagree with the author. Writing: After working on their informative papers, students will pick one for their final publication. Then they will type the papers and share them with the class. Science: With our shorten week filled with activities, we will have a March STEM activity. Students will be making a shoe that is wearable and can be taken on and off out of newspaper. Social Studies: Students this week we will be looking at the impact of immigration on the development of communities. We will be reading about Ellis Island and the effect it had. Announcements *During the week there will be a book fair at Our Shepherd! You can browse on Monday from 3:45 - 4:15 and purchase Tuesday - Thursday at 3:45 - 4:15.
